Ray Penfold enjoyed a 40 plus year racing career which began in the 1950's on the various dirt tracks scattered throughout Maine. Ray built and drove the 1938 Dodge coupe pictured below at Unity Raceway in the late 1950's and early 1960's. The remains of the #3 Dodge sat behind Ray's garage for about 40 years. Son Bill surprised his father by having the old race car restored and presenting the rebuilt #3 Dodge to Ray in August at the "Legends of Unity Raceway Day" in August.

Ray's #3 Dodge coupe, perfectly restored. Note the 2 carburetors on the in-line six-cylinder motor.
Ray is pictured sitting in the Dodge coupe, remembering days gone by. In the 1950's and 1960's, it was common practice to narrow the car's body.
A narrow left front tire was common in the 1950's and 1960's as were rub rails on both sides of the car.

A happy Ray Penfold granting another photo request. One of the old Dodge's original tires and wheels is pictured.
Ray could and still can fit is 6 foot 5 inch frame into the little Dodge coupe.
The name says it all - "Ray Penfold".
John Rice and his associates restored Ray Penfold's #3 Dodge coupe in 30 days.
