Car #2 1/2
rides the dirt sand bank that wrapped around turns 1 and 2. Still
present, the dirt banking has saved many drivers serious injury. Note
the flowers and high grass in the infield.
While some
cars had crudely welded angle iron as a bumper and to protect the
radiator, some teams opted for the stock bumpers as seen above. Note the
race "car" at the back, it is a truck minus the rear
bed.
The
neighbors across the street from the raceway did not appreciate the dust
but it never slowed the drivers and the race cars.
As the race
cars negotiate turn one, note the covered grandstand is full and race
fans are standing several rows deep against the fence to watch the
racing action.
'Wild Bill'
Carlton not only was one of the top drivers in the early years at Unity
Raceway, but he also supplied the wrecker service.
A good day
at the track as the top finishing drivers receive their awards.
Receiving the winner's trophy is Blackie Hilliard (second from left).
During his racing career, Blackie won 12 track championships at Unity
Raceway.
The
gentleman in the center presenting the trophies is Ed Knowles, the owner
and promoter of Unity Raceway.
John
Reed (center),
Governor of the State of Maine, presents the late Keith Fuller with the
winning trophy for the 'Governor's Cup' race. On the left is Bob
Knowles, son of Unity Raceway owner Ed Knowles.
