OLD ORCHARD BEACH

Located on the coast of Maine, Old Orchard Beach is known as a major vacation and resort destination in the summer. Old Orchard Beach is also the only municipality in Maine to have had three different venues for auto racing in the 1900's.

The famous beach was the site of Indianapolis Championship-type car races from 1910 - 1912. (See below.) A couple of miles inland, Old Orchard Beach Speedway was built in the 1930's. (See Old Orchard Beach Speedway.) And, recently, it has been learned Midget car races were held on a Board track in Old Orchard. Little is known about the Board track at this time.

Above are photos of two postcards from the early 1900's depicting the Champ-type car races held on the famous beach of Old Orchard. It is believed the races were held around 1910 to 1912. The postcards were courtesy of Marilyn Wilkinson.
