| On Friday,
January 3, 2003, the Maine Vintage Race Car Association began a year
long campaign called
"A
Year's Drive to the Hall".
The object of the campaign was for past and present auto racing
fans to nominate individuals who they felt should be considered
for induction into the
Maine Motorsports Hall of
Fame.
Race fans past
and present all over Maine submitted the names of over 80 women
and men for consideration. A ten-member Hall of Fame Selection
Committee had the formidable task of reducing the list of 80
names to the twelve individuals who would be the first group
inducted into the Maine
Motorsports Hall of Fame.
On Saturday
evening, January 3, 2004, exactly one year after the "A
Year's Drive to the Hall"
campaign began, the twelve members of the Class of 2004 were
inducted into the Maine
Motorsports Hall of Fame
in ceremonies held at the Augusta (Maine) Civic Center.
It is now time to
think about the Class of 2008. "A
Year's Drive to the Hall V"
will begin at the start of the 2007 calendar year and once again, the Maine Vintage Race Car Association
is asking the public's help. "A
Year's Drive to the Hall V"
Nomination Ballots will be available wherever the Maine Vintage Race
Car Association has an exhibit in 2007. Check the Events
Schedule to see where and when the MVRCA has an exhibit.
Nomination ballots will
also be available at the various race tracks in Maine and by mail from
the MVRCA office. Or, you can print out a ballot by clicking the BALLOT
link. Nominations are also accepted by e-mail at MVRCA@mainevintageracecars.com
.
There are three
categories - Builders, Drivers and Contributors. The
"Builders Category" includes track owners, operators and
promoters. The "Drivers Category" is self-explanatory. The
"Contributors Category" includes - car/team owners, crew
members, track officials, flagmen, pit stewards, track announcers,
photographers, medical personnel, media, etc.
You can nominate has many
individuals as you desire and, if possible, include as much information
as possible about your nominee(s). Be forewarned - this is NOT
a popularity contest! The Hall of Fame Selection Committee will narrow
the list of nominees to a "workable" number, then recruit a
number of individuals to help select the group of inductees for the
Class of 2008.
The main criteria
pertains to the "Drivers Category" - to be considered
for induction into the Maine Motorsports Hall of Fame, a driver must
have been retired from active competition
for a minimum of 5 years.
The names of all
the individuals submitted last year for consideration have been
carried over to this year's list of nominations. |
